@anglais - EN xlators love the word "highlight." Overused. Try "showcase," "underscore," "turn the spotlight on" #TIQC
@anglais - every xlator overuses certain words; his team overuses "showcase." Stick to same frequency as native writers. #TIQC
@anglais - rare/literary words help xlation not sound like an xlation, *if not overused*. If overused, sounds contrived. #TIQC

@ChrisDurbanFR - natural-sounding texts have texture, are "hilly." Bad xlations have no rhythm. #TIQC
@ChrisDurbanFR Bad translations sound like a description of the source text; can't stand on their own. #TIQC
Стоит задуматься и над следующим советом Крис Дурбан тем переводчикам, кто озабочен авторскими правами на свой перевод. Если авторские права еще актуальны для литературных переводчиков, то коммерческим переводчикам, в том числе переводчикам веб-сайтов, приходится учитывать, что в перевод могут вноситься многократные изменения и дополнения разными переводчиками. Тот же совет можно отнести и к переводчикам, использующим базы Translation Memory.

@anglais - when xlating a legal document where the source document prevails, maybe best to stick closely to the source. #TIQC
@anglais - if you're editing for readability and your text is getting longer = problem. #TIQC

Moral of translation conference practice sessions: xlations always improve when you have unlimited time to revise them. #TIQC
Translations also improve when you have 50 translators adding their (unbiased, humble) opinion. #TIQC

Ros Schwartz- translation is always a juggling act between meaning and music. Legal contracts are on one end, poetry on the other. #TIQC
Ros Schwartz writes a first draft for meaning, to make sure that the xlation captures what the author says. 2nd draft is for music. #TIQC
Cool idea: look for YouTube videos of authors reading, to get a sense of voice before you translate. #TIQC
Literary translation is simultaneously harder and easier than commercial translation. How's that for an aphorism? #TIQC
Ros Schwartz: all literary translators need to know the Bible, Greek myths, Roman myths b/c they're referenced so often in lit. #TIQC
